Salvatore Ferragamo
Salvatore Ferragamo is widely known as the “shoemaker to the stars.” Ferragamo, one of the first big names in Italian fashion and leatherwear, was handcrafting beautiful shoes for some iconic feet in Hollywood in the late 1920’s. Salvatore Ferragamo’s first invention in the world of fashion was the now immensely popular crock wedge heel. Created and recreated in the fashion industry over the years in different shapes sizes and materials, ‘wedges’ created an impactful revolution in the fashion world. Ferragamo was also the creator of the famous stiletto heels with metal bracing that were loved and worn by everyone in Hollywood including Marlyin Monroe to Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner, Sophia Lauren and Lauren Bacall.
Ferragamo mastered the art of shoe making through the study of the anatomy of the foot. He pioneered the idea of fashion meeting comfort even in the most unique and creatively designed shoes. By using interesting natural materials like cork, wood and raffia to synthetic resins, metal or even plastic candy wrappers, he created highly innovative footwear that stood out on not only the runway but also the red carpet.
